Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh detected one case each of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 on Sunday. India's Omicron tally has now risen to 35.


ndhra Pradesh detected its first case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 on Sunday. The variant was detected in a 34-year-old traveler from Ireland. The patient is asymptomatic and tested negative for the coronavirus in an RT-PCR test conducted on Saturday.

So far, a total of fifteen passengers from abroad have been found to be Covid-19 positive in Andhra Pradesh. All fifteen samples have been sent for genome sequencing. The reports for ten cases have come back; of the ten, only one was infected with the Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh's first case of the Omicron variant was confirmed late on Saturday night.

ANDHRA OMICRON PATIENT'S TRAVEL HISTORY
Andhra Pradesh's first Omicron case, a 34-year-old traveler, did not come directly from Ireland to Visakhapatnam. The passenger first landed at Mumbai airport, was tested there and found to be Covid-19 negative.

He was, hence, allowed to travel and came to Visakhapatnam on November 27. Another RT-PCR test was conducted in Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh and he tested positive for Covid-19. The sample was then sent to the Council Of Scientific And Industrial ResearchCentre For Cellular And Molecular Biology (CSIRCCMB) in Hyderabad for genome sequencing, where it was declared Omicron positive.

DON'T WORRY, WEAR MASK: ANDHRA GOVT
The Andhra Pradesh government health department has advised the public not to worry or believe any rumors and to continue to take precautions. This includes following social distancing, wearing masks and washing hands regularly.

OMICRON IN INDIA
India's Omicron tally has risen to 35 with the addition of Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh's cases. Maharastra has reported the highest number of Omicron cases at 17. Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka have also reported cases of the new variant.
